Road closures and water quality subjects of debate at St Denys Community Conversation

Road closures, rail works, water quality and community cohesion were among the topics discussed at a fully booked coffee morning with Satvir Kaur MP in St Denys on Saturday.

In another of the MP’s ‘Big Southampton Test Community Conversation’ events, local residents met with Satvir Kaur, Councillor John Savage, volunteers and neighbours for an ‘offline’ discussion about the issues of the day and to consider possible solutions.

All households in the St Denys area received an invitation in the post, and over 50 residents attended the event, held at St Denys Church Centre.

With the temporary closure of Priory Road beginning just the day before – to allow for repairs to the one-hundred-year-old rail underbridge there – attendees spoke about the impact it would have on them. Repair works are scheduled to continue for three months in total, finishing on Christmas Eve, and mitigation measures have been put in place to manage traffic and allow for access during the closure period.

Bringing together Southern Water and Shirley businesses affected by works

Southampton Test MP Satvir Kaur last night brought together Southern Water and businesses from Shirley High Street to discuss the impact months of major sewer repair works have had on trading.

The meeting, hosted by Satvir Kaur MP at St Boniface Church Hall on Tuesday evening, saw businesses raise questions directly with senior staff from Southern Water and contractor Cappagh Browne.

Representatives from a total of 21 local businesses attended, including The Temple Bar, Make it Magic and The Salisbury Arms.

Southern Water began emergency repair works on Shirley High Street in April after a sewer collapsed, with the works causing disruption to access and traffic in the area, and local businesses reporting substantial impacts on trade and takings during the months-long duration. The works are now complete, and the section of the High Street affected was fully reopened to traffic last week.

Southern Water – latest correspondence

In the last couple of days, I’ve written to the Chief Executive of Southern Water on two occasions, about two separate issues in Southampton.

Firstly, I wrote regarding the ‘screening application’ published on Southampton City Council’s Planning Portal yesterday, concerning upgrades to Southern Water’s Portswood Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Local residents are rightly concerned about the impact the upgrade works might have on their community, and so I have requested a meeting with Southern Water to discuss how construction will affect people living close by – in St Denys, particularly on Kent Road – and to find out what they will do to mitigate any adverse impact.

Satvir Kaur welcomes Labour’s once-in-a-generation overhaul of the water system

Satvir Kaur, Labour MP for Southampton Test, has today welcomed the announcement of sweeping reforms to clean up the water industry, strengthen regulation and put an end to failing water companies marking their own homework.

After more than a decade of weak oversight by Conservative governments, the reforms set out in today’s Water White Paper will create a new single water regulator with tough new powers, including a Chief Engineer to carry out hands-on checks of water infrastructure and stop pipes, pumps and treatment works being left to crumble.

Southern Water Outage: Southampton’s unwelcome Christmas tradition

It’s that time of year, and while many of us are gearing up for Christmas, this past week I’ve been busy with one of Southampton’s most unwelcome Christmas traditions! The water supply disappearing. Southern Water caused utter chaos and concern when their water supply to thousands of homes stopped due to an issue that arose while cleaning and updating the Testwood Water Supply Works in Totton.

Southern Water’s handling of it, has been quite frankly appalling. The lack of water stations in Southampton, the confused communication from the Southern Water team, and even when these minimal water stations were set up, there was confusion over when they opened and closed, as well as only being able to access them with a car. Once they were “up and running” they ran out of water, leaving many stranded having waited hours. Those that could not get to a water station, and particularly the vulnerable (who were meant to be on a priority list for Southern Water to hand deliver to their homes!) – were left in limbo, waiting for water they were promised, that never came or came too late. At one point there were more than 20,000 people on that list.
