Satvir Kaur MP joined by Wombles for Shirley litter pick

The Wombles joined Southampton Test MP Satvir Kaur and local environmental campaigners for a community litter pick at Shirley Pond Park.

In a litter pick with a difference, the iconic Wombles teamed up with volunteers and Satvir Kaur MP to help tidy Shirley Pond Park. The park forms part of the Lordsdale Greenway, which has recently been designated a Local Nature Reserve.

More than a dozen people took part in the event, braving the rain and picking up more than ten bags of rubbish, highlighting the value of protecting local environments.

The Wombles Community Charity have been champions of environmental action for decades and remain as active as ever. From supporting national initiatives such as the Great British Spring Clean and WRAP’s recycling campaigns, to providing free educational resources for schools, helping to mobilise communities and inspire the next generation to look after their local environment.

Satvir Kaur, MP for Southampton Test, has previously raised issues around litter and recycling in Parliament and was keen to spotlight the importance of protecting green spaces in the city.

Satvir said: “We are so lucky in Southampton to have incredible green and blue spaces for everyone to enjoy, and it’s vital that we take care of them.

“I’ve had so much fun taking part in this litter pick and I want to thank all the volunteers who came along today, the Friends of Shirley Pond for the amazing work they do, and of course my new best friends, the Wombles, for joining us too!”

The Wombles Community Charity has a growing network of volunteers across the UK who work year-round to clean up streets, parks and public spaces. The charity also works with local and national government to raise awareness of recycling and the importance of protecting the environment.

A spokesperson for The Wombles Community Charity said: “The Wombles were delighted to support the Southampton litter pick. We work to empower communities across the UK to take action on litter and care for the places they live. By bringing people together through practical clean-ups and supporting local groups, we help communities protect their environment and take pride in their neighbourhoods. Whether it’s five minutes or a larger clean-up, every action makes a difference. We can all be more Womble!”
