My first ever Christmas Card Competition, and we have a winner!

I was delighted to visit a very Christmassy Newlands Primary School in Millbrook this week to present the winner of this year’s Christmas Card Competition with their prize. After being elected in July, I knew that running this competition was something I really wanted to do, so this is especially exciting for me. Each year we’ll pick a different school in the constituency to take part, and thank you to Newlands Primary School for being the first.

The winner was year 1 student, Laila Weller. Laila’s artwork really stood out to me as it features a wonderful handprint of a Christmas tree which is so festive. Laila is just five-years-old, and her creativity brilliant, well done Laila!

It was a really tough decision, as there were over 80 entries submitted from the children at the school.

I got to stop and chat with the whole class, and speak with the Head Teacher, Mrs Karen Mellor too. Mrs Mellor spoke of her pride at the students’ efforts. She said: “The children at Newlands Primary were excited to be asked to enter a competition to design a Christmas card for Satvir. We have many budding artists, and there were over 80 entries to choose from. Well done to everyone who entered, and thank you to Miss Burt, our new Art Leader, who inspired the children to take part.”

Southampton is a city known for the arts and has a fantastic cultural offering. We want to encourage our young people to be part of that and get involved with the arts. So I was very pleased when so many children were interested in taking part.

A huge thanks to all of the children who entered, and to the school for helping us run the competition. And a very Merry Christmas to everyone in Southampton Test!
