WE DID IT! I am delighted that Labour took back control of Southampton City Council at the local elections in May 2022 and I can’t wait to get to work as your new Leader.
We are eager and ready to start delivering for all our communities and I personally want to say a huge thank you for everyone’s support.
Over the last 12 months, we refocused our campaign and set out a new vision for Southampton. We spoke to over 30,000 voters and listened to their concerns.
A New Vision For Southampton
Labour will ensure that every pound the council spends works for you, making Southampton and its neighbourhoods places to be proud of, where individuals and families can grow and prosper in a safer, greener and more affordable city.
We won’t waste public money on fixing private roads, but will invest in our communities with cleaner streets, improved pavements and greater enforcement on dangerous parking and fly-tipping. We will restore the investment into our district centres which the Tories slashed, ensuring no neighbourhood is left behind.
Everyone deserves to feel safe in their home and local area and Labour’s £1.5m Safer Neighbourhoods Fund will help communities feel safer, prevent crime and tackle anti-social behaviour.
Labour takes the climate crisis seriously, and we will invest in our green spaces, improve recycling and make our homes more energy efficient to keep bills low.
Above all we know the cost of living crisis affects everyone, and one-off loans won’t touch the sides. Labour will build more desperately needed council homes, make Southampton a Living Wage City and focus on local jobs and training for young people. We want better travel options, and will make public transport cheaper and more accessible, particularly for families, with a new family travel card.
Thanks to you
Listening to you throughout the year has helped shape our New Vision for Southampton.
As the new Labour Leader of the council I look forward to working with you all to deliver the change we have been fighting so hard for.
