Richard Green Internship Reflection: Maryam

By Maryam Roble

This internship has taught me so much about politics, public service, and, most importantly, my own potential. As a Black Muslim woman from a working-class background, I never truly saw politics as a space where I belonged. There is still a lack of representation from diverse backgrounds, and for a long time, I didn’t think this was a career that someone like me could pursue. Working with Satvir Kaur MP has completely changed that perspective. She has shown me that being unapologetically yourself is one of the greatest strengths you can have in politics. Watching her lead with authenticity has been incredibly inspiring and has given me the confidence to believe that there is a place for me after all.

It has been an honour and a privilege to work alongside such a passionate and motivated individual, as well as her fantastic and welcoming team. The opportunities I have been given throughout this internship are ones I could only have dreamed of. Visiting Parliament and 10 Downing Street are experiences that still feel surreal, and they have shown me that doors I never imagined possible can be opened.

Throughout the internship, I gained valuable experience in constituency casework, policy analysis, canvassing, and campaigning. These experiences have strengthened my communication, analytical, problem-solving, and teamwork skills, while also giving me a much deeper understanding of UK politics and the vital role MPs play in representing and advocating for their constituents. Seeing first-hand the impact that dedicated public servants can have on people’s lives has been eye-opening and motivating.

Satvir’s unwavering commitment to serving the people of Southampton Test has been truly inspiring. Her dedication and tireless work for her constituents have demonstrated what meaningful political leadership looks like. It has reinforced the importance of listening to communities and standing up for those whose voices are often overlooked in order to make meaningful change.

I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity and for everything I have learned during my time with Satvir Kaur MP and her team. This internship has expanded my knowledge of politics and given me the confidence to pursue opportunities I once thought were beyond my reach. It is an experience I will always value, and one that has inspired me to work towards making politics more inclusive and accessible for future generations.
